Restore Gum Health and Protect Your Teeth
Gingival (gum) recession occurs when the gum tissue surrounding the teeth pulls back, exposing more of the tooth or its root. This condition can lead to increased sensitivity, higher risk of cavities on the roots, and even tooth loss if left untreated.
The most frequent contributing factors include:
- Periodontal (gum) disease
- Aggressive tooth brushing
- A history of orthodontic tooth movement
In mild cases of gum recession, an adequate zone of keratinized (firm, protective) tissue may still be present around the tooth. In such instances, improvements in oral hygiene practices and brushing technique may be sufficient to prevent further progression. However, if the recession extends into the alveolar mucosa—a thinner, less resilient tissue—prolonged exposure may lead to additional complications, including:
- Increased sensitivity to hot and cold
- Difficulty maintaining proper oral hygiene due to discomfort
- Aesthetic concerns, as teeth may appear longer
- Greater risk for root caries
A gingival graft is a highly effective treatment designed to stabilize the gum tissue and protect the exposed root surface. A thin piece of tissue is either harvested from the roof of the mouth or gently repositioned from nearby areas with benefits of grafting include:
- Improved gum health and long-term stability
- Reduced sensitivity
- Enhanced esthetics and a more natural gumline
- Prevention of future recession or root damage
