Protecting the Health of Your Implants
Peri-implant diseases refer to conditions affecting the tissues surrounding dental implants, which can compromise the longevity and success of the implant. These conditions include peri-implant mucositis (inflammation of the gum tissue around the implant) and peri-implantitis (infection and bone loss around the implant). Early detection and appropriate treatment are critical to preserving the health and function of your dental implants.
Signs and Symptoms
- Red, swollen, or bleeding gums around the implant
- Pain or discomfort near the implant
- Recession of gum tissue around the implant
- Increased pocket depth around the implant
- Mobility of the implant in advanced cases
Treatment of Peri-implantitis
Peri-implantitis requires more intensive treatment to prevent bone loss and preserve the implant. Treatment options include:
- Non-surgical periodontal therapy
- Surgical Intervention: In severe cases, surgery may be required to access deeper tissues and clean around the implant thoroughly. If there has been significant bone loss, bone grafting may be required.
- In cases where the implant is no longer salvageable, removal of the implant—known as anexplantation procedure—may be necessary to prevent further tissue or bone damage.
