Supporting Healthy Gums During Tooth Movement
Orthodontic treatment focuses on aligning teeth and correcting bite issues, but the success of this process depends heavily on the health of the supporting gum and bone structures. As periodontists, we play a vital role in preparing and maintaining the periodontal foundation before, during, and after orthodontic care.
Why Periodontal Care Is Important During Orthodontic Treatment
Orthodontic forces move teeth through the bone. If the gums or bone are compromised by inflammation, recession, or periodontal disease, it can negatively affect tooth movement, stability, and long-term outcomes. Periodontal therapies ensure a healthy environment for safe and predictable orthodontic results.
Common Periodontal Interventions with Orthodontics
Pre-Orthodontic Periodontal Evaluation
We assess gum health, bone levels, and any signs of periodontal disease before orthodontic appliances are placed.
Scaling and Root debridement
If gum disease is present, non-surgical therapy may be needed to reduce inflammation and stabilize the tissues.
Gingival Recontouring
For excessive gum tissue or uneven gum lines, recontouring can enhance esthetics and improve bracket placement or is needed after a course of orthodontic treatment to improve and restore esthetics.
Frenectomy
Removal of a restrictive frenum (the tissue between the upper front teeth or under the tongue) may prevent relapse after orthodontic closure of a gap.
Surgical exposure of an unerupted tooth
that is positioned abnormally allows the crown to be uncovered so that an orthodontic bracket can be placed, enabling the tooth to be guided into proper alignment through orthodontic treatment
Periodontal Maintenance During Braces
Ongoing cleanings and monitoring to prevent gum inflammation and tissue damage due to appliances.
