What to Expect When Getting Dental Implants

How Does a Specialist Evaluate You for Dental Implants?

A candidate assessment typically involves a detailed review of your gum health, jawbone volume, and overall medical history. Advanced 3D imaging tools may be used to assess bone structure and determine the most appropriate placement approach. At a periodontic dental clinic, this evaluation stage is designed to identify whether any preparatory treatment, such as gum disease management or bone grafting, may be needed before implant placement can proceed.

Some patients who visit a periodontist serving Brighton, VIC, may be found to have active gum disease that requires treatment first. Healthy gums and sufficient bone are essential foundations for a successful implant outcome. Without addressing these factors, the risk of implant complications may be higher.

What Does the Implant Process Involve?

The placement process generally follows several stages, each spaced to allow proper healing.

  • Consultation and 3D imaging to assess your bone structure, gum condition, and suitability for treatment.
  • Preparatory procedures such as gum disease treatment or bone grafting, if required.
  • Surgical placement of the titanium implant post into the jawbone under local anaesthetic.
  • A healing period of several months, during which the implant integrates with the surrounding bone through a process called osseointegration.
  • Referral to your general dentist or prosthodontist to fit the final crown, bridge, or denture restoration.

Each stage is guided by evidence-based techniques and precise diagnostic tools. The timeline can vary depending on individual health factors, so it is important to discuss a personalised plan with your specialist.

Why Periodontal Health Matters Before Getting Implants

Healthy gums and bone are the foundation of a successful implant. If gum disease is present and untreated, it can compromise the long-term stability of the implant and increase the risk of complications. A specialist periodontist may also evaluate whether bone grafting is needed to build sufficient structure to support the implant securely.

Ongoing maintenance after placement is equally important. Depending on individual needs, professional cleaning appointments may be recommended every three to six months to protect both the implant and surrounding tissue.
